Generation Z

ZSCALER WHITE PAPER Gen Y EXTENDING THE LIFE OF GEN X (+ MOBILE) Generation Y, more commonly referred to as “Millenials,” brought with them mobile applications, networks, and devices. Suddenly everyone and everything was either mobile or promised to be in the very near future. But did everyone in IT really embrace mobility as they should have? Really? How many of us can remember our own voice or those of our colleagues saying things like, “We are a Blackberry shop, period!” or, “We will never allow an iPhone on our network!” And when we did finally come around to our new reality, we responded quite predictably — by extending our Gen X models as best we could to mobile platforms. We doubled down on network management (NAC), device management (MDM), and encryption (client SSL/ IPsec VPN). And yet, in the end we found ourselves perhaps a tad more secure on mobile devices, while certainly much less rich in our pockets, as we spent a lot of IT resources on failed or just declining “solutions,” all while the threats were moving in around us. Looking back, it’s hard to see this relatively brief generation of IT security as anything but a bandage for a broken Gen X model, merely extending the life of what was most familiar to us. Generation Z says... SIMPLIFY Focus on security that solves the majority of problems as far away from your network and devices as possible. For example, if your ISP came to you and said they could deliver a clean Internet pipe everywhere for a fraction of the cost of all the appliances that you would have to implement to achieve the same, it would be hard to imagine anyone not wanting to do just that. Simple. MORE OF THE SAME: Here again, we looked to our infrastructure vendors to offer up solutions to our new mobile needs. And what we got were largely adaptations of existing Gen X (aka “Next Gen”). More appliances. More software. Just...more. Instinctively, we largely convinced ourselves that we could “leverage existing vendor relationships” in this endeavor. The names are quite familiar, albeit with a few startups to add to the mix, most of which were acquired by the larger infrastructure vendors who snapped them up to re-brand them as their own, perhaps to sell them back off a few years later or “end-of-life” them altogether. • • • • AirWatch Good for Mobile Cisco Neoteris • • • • Juniper Networks Palo Alto Networks Symantec FireEye How many of these (or others that perhaps come to mind), really nailed it when it comes to not only enabling secure mobility, but also setting up the inevitable move to the real next generation — the cloud? The future is mobile computing — smartphones and tablets are just elements of it. The industry is on the verge of a whole new paradigm. – Thorsten Heins, BlackBerry ©2017 Zscaler, Inc. And, thankfully for many of us, it’s not defined by age, but by the spirit, energy, and drive to continue to make a difference. And by all accounts and contemporary evidence, the impact will continue to be felt far and wide. Indeed, the changes that are being brought about by this generation bear a striking resemblance to the Perestroika movement in the 1980s, bringing with it openness and a reconstructing of an entire political system. And so it is with IT today, as the user population and business leaders are increasingly calling the shots as to which services are consumed. This includes security! Purely from a business perspective, this change has been coming for a long time. In May 2003, the Harvard Business Review published a paper entitled “IT Doesn’t Matter.” It was a provocative title to be sure, but it clearly and undeniably laid out the commoditization of IT and how changes would transform the way we deliver and operate IT well into the future. That time has come, requiring everyone in IT to recognize the forces reshaping the their businesses. Generation Z says... TRANSFORM Start with identity, because without that you can’t fully put applications and security into the cloud. Finally, be a leader amongst your peers, ushering in the next generation of IT so that you are not left without a seat at the table. This means leveraging security platforms that amplify your abilities, and simultaneously driving down cost. SPOTTING GEN Z: Thankfully, spotting a true Generation Z security professional or organization is quite easy. Generation Z... Is cloud first, such that there is never an appliance or software solution entertained when a cloud-based offering of equal or greater value exists. Is platform centered, able to leverage a comprehensive platform in ways that siloed products, organizations, or even individuals can only dream about. Is great for business, as it greatly drives down the cost of IT, thereby allowing the business to outmaneuver its competitors. No more talking about aligning with the business; Gen Z is enabling part of it. Is sharing, totally believing that security is not itself a competitive advantage but rather an opportunity for the rising tide to float all boats. Thrives on great user experience, never satisfied with one less unnecessary step or process when another one can be eliminated. You can’t build a power plant by racking and stacking a bunch of portable power generators; you have to set out to build an actual power plant. – Jay Chaudhry, Founder and CEO, Zscaler™ ©2017 Zscaler, Inc.
